Respicius Francis: Which business are you dealing with in Kenya?
Mwenda Thuranira :I am a Real Estate Agent and a Property Developer
Respicius Francis; Why have you decided to do that business?
Mwenda Thuranira :I got into Real Estate Business as a result of working on construction sites in the USA. I watched professionals working when I worked in the construction industry when in the USA. It triggered a passion for wealth creation and changing communities through sustainable, affordable and innovative habitats.
Respicius Francis :which challenges are you facing in your business?
Mwenda Thuranira :We can say currently we are in the process of recovery after the last year’s election. The Real Estate Marketing is picking up and it is vibrant country wide. We are experiencing an increase in enquiries both local and from the diaspora.
Respicius Francis Kenya government giving you cooperation when you want to start your business?
Mwenda Thuranira :Kenyan government is trying to nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship in the country through incentives and policies such as Investment Allowances on acquisition of selected assets for business e.g. building installation machines may attract reduced or minimal tax deductions. In some instances depending on the industry there are import incentive schemes to enable businesses import machinery raw materials for their inputs.
Export Incentive Schemes such as Export Processing Zones (EPZs), duty free imported raw materials, no Value Added Tax (VAT) on exports, capital allowances on the installed machinery - exporters are allowed to claim 20% as export compensation, etc.
The government, through the Ministry of Industrialization, has constructed sheds which are used as operating premises for entrepreneurs. Examples of such sheds are the Nyayo sheds which are meant to cater for the Jua Kali artisans and the construction of Muthurwa hawkers market.
Currently the government has brought its services closer to the people by establishment of Huduma Centers which is basically e.government system that enables one acess government services even at county level. It is now faster and easier to register a company, aquire a trade lincese etc. this has reduced a lot of red tape.
The government has been actively committed to providing finance to various groups of entrepreneurs. The establishment of the Kenyan Youth Fund and the Women Enterprise Fund is a clear indication of the government’s commitment to ensuring accessibility of credit facilities to both practicing and aspiring entrepreneurs.
For foreign business investors, there is Kenya Investment Authority that works with foreigner to guide them on investment opportunities, incentives and information to make the business establishment easier.
Respicius Francis. How much did you use as a capital to start your business??
Mwenda Thuranira :We basically began with about 10M
Respicius Francis:.Which methods are using to advertise your business so that to get customers?
Mwenda Thuranira:Our organization basically engages in various activities to promote our services. We use:
Print Media - Newspaper Adverts and Articles
Social Media Platforms
Electronic Media
Experiential Marketing – highly targeted events
We seek to be a one stop shop for our clients both Buyers, Sellers and Property Developers
Respicius Francis. Is there good environment in Kenya for doing business or entrepreneurship for youths?
The country withstood the immense burden of going through two presidential elections within two months at the end of last year. In general we have peace, government goodwill and working infrastructure that enables businesses to excel in in Kenya. Regardless of the challenges, we remain a business and investment Hub for East and Central Africa, a gateway to many African countries. There exist numerous business opportunities in Kenya for entrepreneurs to tap into. Like every other country we do have challenges such as the high cost of power and business interruptions during election years.
Kenya has been ranked the third world’s most conducive business environment and Africa’s most reformed country for the second consecutive year according to a World Bank’s Doing Business 2017 report, which states that the country climbed 21 places to 92nd from 113th last year.
Kenya has made the appropriate legal reforms for ease of doing business and invested in massive infrastructural development, such as the ongoing 10,000 kilometres of roads country wide and major sections of the Standard Gauge Railway complete
Some of our victories include the ease of starting a business by merging formal procedures that small businesses need to comply with to register; reducing the cost of construction permits by eliminating clearance fees from the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) and the National Construction Authority (NCA); enhancing electricity reliability through investment in distribution infrastructure and establishment of power restoration squads in case of outages.
The Ministry of Public Service, Youth & Gender Affairs founded a state corporation, The Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) on1st February 2007.The objective is to create employment opportunities for young people through entrepreneurship. This is by providing financial support and business development services to youth owned enterprises. This provides an avenue for youth to acquire skills, information and funds for viable business ideas and ventures.
Respicius Francis :Is it easy for the entrepreneur like you to get loan?
Mwenda Thuranira :Easy is a relative word. It depends on the institution that you approach and also your kind of business. There are various institutions that led money to Entrepreneurs. I believe there is someone willing to listen to your idea, depending on how you package your idea. Sacco’s work well for startups and many Banks offer various SMEBanking services and products. As an entrepreneur, you must search for information, you must thirst for information so that you are in a position to know what is available in the market and also make informed decision.
Larger Banks require collateral when borrowing, and often startups and also smaller businesses do not have assets to borrow against. This is definitely a challenge to many.
Again, Entrepreneurs must mine for information, information is the new currency in business
Respicius FrancisWhich are your future expectation in your business that you are doing?
Mwenda Thuranira :Our future expectations is to grow our brand and business units. Our direction fo growth is geared towards increased revenue, expansion of branches regionally, and developing a Project that will entail creation of a City such as Tatu City. We do not forget our communities, through our CSR department continue to work towards giving back to communities through school fees programs, Boy and Girl Child empowerment and Health Clinic support
Respicius Francis Do you think the education that Kenya learners acquire is quality?
Mwenda Thuranira :We as a country have made tremendous progress in education. Kenya is favorably rated as one of the few countries with enrolment rates of over 95 per cent and closer to achieving universal education.
The quality of education remains a major challenge. This has led to the growth of a parallel private school education system that is gradually privatizing education country-wide. This is filling in the gaps. The government is working on enhancing quality education, which is a pillar in Vision 2030.
Despite the challenges which are experienced worldwide, I must say we as Kenyans we are faring very well and am proud to say that we have produced prominent, professional and high performing people. Kenyans can be found around the globe working in both white collar Jobs, Pink Collar Jobs and Blue collar. Our work ethics is renowned worldwide. I have to agree we have quality education, though not perfect. The government and private sector continue to find solutions to better our education system. Quality education is indispensable for economic progress and achievement of
Respicius Francis.Give us your opinions about the leadership of Uhuru Kenyatta..
Mwenda Thuranira:I think he is doing a good job and we are hopeful for a bright future. We look forward to the fulfilment of the Jubilee Promises, over the last 5 years we have had challenges and victories. I do believe he is committed to the people of Kenya, by building strong foundations through the Jubilee Promises:
Job Creation through county governments to establish at least one industry in every county.
Establish a government sponsored apprenticeship programme of up to 12 months for all university and TVET graduates.
Double the number of vulnerable citizens supported through the cash transfer programme (Inua Jamii) This will include all citizens above the age of 70; in addition, all citizens above the age of 70 will obtain health insurance cover through the NHIF.
free day public secondary schools in Kenya.
Facilitate mass housing production - affordable homes

Government service delivery through Huduma Centers
Respicius Francis. How is the situation of non native citizen to participate in activity in Kenya?is it Friendly?
Mwenda Thuranira :Kenya has been considered a haven of peace for its relative stability. For the last three decades, Kenya has welcomed and hosted refugees and asylum seekers from Somalia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda and South Sudan. Statistics from the United Nation High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR) show that 6.4 per cent of Kenya’s population (488, 415 people) was composed of refugees as of January 2018.
Most foreigners live among Kenyans, freely and I really don’t think many could complain of people being unfriendly. As long as you have the necessary documentation, anyone can live and move freely among Kenyans without much problem.
